  1. Ah, this sounds interesting. I’ve decided to make an active search for mysteries after almost having given up on modern thrillers, many of which make me feel I am reading the same book over and over again. I was hoping to find some contemporary authors, who still write books, but this one sounds like something I would enjoy, so I may add it to my list.

Maybe you have some ideas for a good mystery? My favourites are either slow and character driven or highly unusual ones, which can make my head spin.

    1. I have the same experience with modern thrillers and crime mysteries. Not sure, maybe you can check out this list of mine? https://thoughtsonpapyrus.com/2021/04/20/detective-fiction-day/. From it, I particularly recommend My Name is Red by Pamuk, The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau by Burnet and Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Tokarczuk. I also previously enjoyed The Scapegoat by du Maurier. I’d describe all of them as “slow” and character-driven.

      1. Great, thanks for the recommendations! Burnet is already on my list (His Bloody Project). I tried to get Drive Your Plow, but it hasn’t come out on audio yet. The Honjin Murders is also a great suggestion.

  2. I’m reading Schiller’s classic The Ghost-Seer, a curious mix of detective fiction and metaphysical speculation set during the Age of Enlightenment; this sounds to have a similar vibe and I’m very attracted by it. Thanks for drawing attention to it!

    1. You’re welcome, I hope you find it interesting if you decide to read it. Your book sounds deeper and more serious than The Erasers, which for the most part reads like a tricky film noir script. Your description also reminded me of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Devil’s Elixirs. I guess it takes a very diligent reader to sift through all the clues, details and the philosophy these authors intended and put for consideration.
