    1. I definitely recommend. I was first drawn to his book Los Pasos Perdidos, see my review – https://thoughtsonpapyrus.com/2019/05/01/review-the-lost-steps-by-alejo-carpentier/ and its anthropological, existential (my favourite) and transcendental themes, and later also got intrigued by his theory of lo real maravilloso. Incidentally, I am now reading Carpentier’s Explosion in a Cathedral. He is the master of depicting European and Latin American clashes and what happens when one tries to mimic European ideals on the foreign soil. And, also often easier “to get” than say Fuentes or Llosa.
