    1. Thank you! Yes, a bit ambitious. I will see where it all takes me. I have been a little disappointed in the last few years by the (new) historical fiction that I read, and I thought why not try to write my own and something I would enjoy reading myself. No harm in trying, I guess 🙂

  1. Wow, I thought, I had a busy January, but it doesn’t compare with yours! Great review, I like the sound of this one. The themes come across as quite heavy for the story to be compared to YA novels, but I guess you mean the writing?

    1. Thanks! Yes, the main character is a young girl and the writing is very simple (hence YA). It is definitely worth the read, and at least provides you with an interesting insight into one chapter of the Dominican Republic’s history.

  2. Excellent review! I’ve heard of this one but never picked it up, and am more intrigued now that I have a better sense of what it’s about. I love that the author is able to convey so much through a young narrator who doesn’t fully understand or see everything that’s going on. It sounds like a worthwhile read for many ages.
And good luck with all of your projects, that sounds like such an exciting way to start the year! I love playing piano so I’m especially glad to see that on your list, but everything you mentioned sounds appealing!

    1. Thank you! I enjoyed this one even though I do not normally read YA anymore. You are right that it is a worthwhile read for all ages. And am glad that my activities sound interesting to you, I hope I can keep up with them 🙂

  3. Very busy!! Japanese and writing two books! Very busy indeed, yet you manage am excellent review. I read this last year and thought it was a very good introduction from the perspective of the young narrator into a part of history I didn’t know much about

    1. Thank you, and you are very right about “Before We Were Free”. Suddenly we know an important part of the Dominican Republic history by reading this account of a little girl and it felt both informative and very personal.

  4. I love that you have set the goals for yourself on these ambitious projects…that’s really inspiring Diana and I hope you keep us updated on how these things are going. I plan on learning piano as well, I am working two jobs right now and running this blog as well as trying to lose 10 kilos for my friends wedding so that learning piano goal has sneakily snuck down the list a little bit, but I will keep you posted. Really cool you are doing this, keep me updated

    1. Thanks for your support, and it is great that you plan to start learning the piano too! I guess with piano the first hurdle is the most difficult and challenging, such as learning the notes, etc., and after that it becomes much easier. Your life sounds very busy too, and I hope everything works out for you too re your projects and goals!

      1. That’s very encouraging about piano being really challenging at first and then getting easier. Thanks lovely for your message of support, it also helps me as well. Hope it all works out with the goals and keep me updated with how you’re going 🙂

    1. Yes, one is historical fiction with one central mystery set in France, and another novel will be more literary and psychological that explores the issues of identity and duality. These were not intentional projects and ideas for these two books came to me slowly over the past months (I never wanted to be an author). I just thought why not try and see where these ideas would take me.
