My Life in Books: 2019

I saw this bookish meme on Laura, Rachel & Callum’s blogs and have decided to post my answers to it, too (the creator of this tag is Roof Beam Reader). The rule is that you must use only books you have read this year to answer the questions below without repeating any of the book titles. It looks like my version of this tag came off much darker than I initially intended it to be (so my answers contain dark humour). As usual, I am not tagging anyone, and anyone is free to participate.

In high school I was Quantum Enigma (Bruce Rosenblum & Fred Kuttner)

People might be surprised by The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt (Toby Wilkinson)

I will never be The Architect’s Apprentice (Elif Shafak)

My fantasy job is The Editor (Steven Rowley) – not really, but it fits!

At the end of a long day I need The Axeman’s Jazz (Ray Celestin)

I hate Hunger (Knut Hamsun)

Wish I had The Black Sheep (Honore de Balzac) (cute, he?)

My family reunions are The Butchering Art (Lindsey Fitzharris) – lol, I just could not resist 🙂

At a party you’d find me with Sulphuric Acid (Amélie Nothomb) – lol, sounds even more terrible 🙂

I’ve never been to Brazzaville Beach (William Boyd)

A happy day includes Mysteries (Knut Hamsun)

Motto I live by The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (Carson McCullers)

On my bucket list is The Worst Journey in the World (Apsley Cherry-Garrard)

In my next life, I want to have Affluence without Abundance (James Suzman)

  1. Ah, this is excellent, I love how eerily dark you made it! The Butchering Art is a beautiful answer, and The Axeman’s Jazz is an intriguing title even on its own! Great tag, great post. 🙂

    1. Thank you! There are too many books that I read and loved in 2019 (not necessarily published in 2019), so most likely I will not publish a post on that alone. I discovered some amazing Japanese, French and American authors, which I cannot stop thinking about, including Honore de Balzac, Hanya Yanagihara, Kobo Abe and Yoko Ogawa, and all their work impressed me and became my favourite. My favourite 2019 release has got to be Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys and my biggest disappointment of the year is Ann Patchett’s The Dutch House.

I have noticed you are participating in January in Japan, and I am also participating in the Japanese Lit Reading Challenge hosted by Dolce Bellezza. I will be interested to read your opinions on Mishima and Murakami. On my to-read list is also Mishima and Oe, but also Tanizaki – The Makioka Sisters and Devils in Daylight.
