  1. What a great guide! I got to spend some time in Yorkshire years back and it was amazing, but I never made it to most of the places you mention. Now I really want to go back.

  2. I totally ADORE York. Been there three times and would love to go back again, and again! By the way, the only Pogrom against the Jews in England happened in York, but they not only acknowledge this, they have publicly apologized. I appreciate that!

  3. I love York and the Jorvik Museum in particular – I went in the 80s and then again some time pre-pandemic but not much pre and it was still good, just different. I think they do a really good job there. The Minster is amazing – I went in the 80s particularly to see a boss in the roof that I think had been the subject of a (children’s TV programme) Blue Peter competition after part of the Minster had burned down. Showing my age now! Yes: here we go https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cxw2rlxmk2vo

    1. Fascinating. Isn’t it interesting to compare cities through time? It was my first time, but my mom also went in the early 1990s and what she remembers most vividly is the Viking Centre (I don’t think she even got to the Minster then). It is so interesting to hear of the changes. Unfortunately our Minster tour guide wasn’t really up to her usual self that day and made various history and other mistakes, but I enjoyed the atmosphere of the cathedral. If I knew more of the roof boss re-design and this story, I bet it would all have made it so much more interesting for me and I would have bought that restoration rose pin (my childhood wasn’t spent in the UK and I first watched Blue Peter in 2004). Thanks for sharing the article.

  4. I enjoyed this virtual trip through York! I remember visiting Jorvik as a child in the 1980s and being amazed by the realistic scenes and smells. It was quite innovative back then. Good to hear that it’s been renovated and is still a good experience all these years later. I’ve been to most of the other places you mention but didn’t know about Fairfax House, so it was very interesting to read about that.

    1. It is so interesting you visited in the 1980s. Shopping definitely changed from that time, but I feel like York’s cultural core remained pretty much the same and only been improved/upgraded/renovated. Yes, Fairfax House is a hidden gem. Not many people have it on their York to-do list and, on the face of it – understandable. But, those who do try it find it unforgettable. It is so atmospheric, and does offer a unique experience with so many exquisite objects to view.
