Saint Augustine or Augustine of HippoΒ (13 November 354 β 28 August 430) was born on this day in 354. He was a philosopher and a bishop whose writings influenced Western philosophy and Christianity. His works includeΒ The City of God,Β On Christian Doctrine, andΒ Confessions. Below are some of his quotes.
“Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.”
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”
“Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.“
βRight is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.β
βThe truth is like a lion; you donβt have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself.β
βIn order to discover the character of people we have only to observe what they love.β
βPray as though everything depends on God. And work as if everything depends on you.β

Probably one of the few theologians who is highly thought of by both Catholics and Protestants! (John Calvin borrowed heavily from Augustine)

I so loved studying City of God and The Confessions at university, and continue to be fascinated by Augustine and early Christian thought in general.
